Possible thunderstorm asthma in the ACT and surrounding region

Oct. 25, 2026

ACT Thunderstorm Asthma

The ACT Government has issued a public health alert for possible thunderstorm asthma across the ACT and surrounding region on Sunday 25 October. High pollen levels, windy weather and forecast storms have increased the risk.

Thunderstorm asthma events are uncommon. The alert means an event could occur, but it does not mean one will happen.

Who may be at higher risk?

Thunderstorm asthma can affect anyone. People may be at greater risk if they have hay fever, currently have asthma or have experienced it in the past, develop asthma symptoms during spring, or are sensitive to grass pollen.

What you can do

ACT Government advises people at higher risk to take the following precautions:

  • Watch for symptoms of asthma or hay fever.
  • Follow your asthma or hay fever action plan. Take medication as prescribed and carry it with you when leaving home.
  • Try to remain indoors, keeping doors and windows closed.
  • Avoid being outside during gusty winds.
  • While indoors during the storm, switch off air conditioners that draw in outside air. This includes evaporative coolers.

In a medical emergency, call Triple Zero (000). Remain indoors while waiting for the ambulance.
